We all feel a little misunderstood sometimes, but maybe communicators are more justified than others.

We recently asked Ragan.com readers what's the biggest misconception people have about communicators.

Most respondents agreed: anyone can do their job.

"The irony is that when we do our jobs well, we make it look easy and effortless," Ilene Peterson said.

Here's how the misconceptions stacked up:

  • Anyone can do what you do (55 percent)
  • You don't need a big budget/staff (17 percent)
  • All you do is write newsletters (14 percent)
  • You're clueless about math/strategy (6 percent)
  • Other (8 percent)

How can communicators set the record straight?

"I think it's the job of communicators to educate their organizations and clients about the value of their work," Alison Wines said. "The more we can measure our impact, the more seriously we are likely to be taken and the greater influence we'll have on strategy and culture."
