This week,
#RaganSocial Twitter chat attendees discussed image-based platforms such
as Pinterest, Tumblr and Instagram. They're all the rage right now, if you haven't heard.
So what's the best way to use images on social media? Our #RaganSocial participants weighed in:
1.
Don't go on a picture-posting spree without evaluating your goals.
Do you want to showcase a new product or communicate your brand's story?
Birchbox, a company that helps followers discover high-end beauty, grooming and lifestyle products uses Instagram to showcase products and further connect with its audience through pictures of events and
workplace fun.
2. Don't be afraid of cross promotion.
Pinterest allows you to link pictures to URLs. Companies can use appealing pictures to attract visitors and then link them to a blog or website with
additional information. Use platforms like Pinterest to display products, promote branding and run contests. Include pictures on blog posts so people can
pin them.
3. Don't be afraid to think outside the box.
Just because your company/brand doesn't have a physical product to sell doesn't mean you can't use image-based platforms to your advantage. Some of the
creative uses #RaganSocial chat attendees suggest are using platforms to showcase before-and-after work (architectural firms, for example, can benefit from
this), online portfolios, and events to communicate your company's story visually.
Brands can also create timely images to attract an audience. The New York Times, for example, has a Tumblr for
election season.
4. Don't forget to bring your smartphone/camera.
Brands like Redbull use Instagram to share pictures from events. Be sure to check out the creative memes,
too!
Burberry uses Instagram to showcase pictures of London, furthering bolstering its image as a brand with a
"distinctly British attitude."
5. Don't be a rule breaker.
Make sure your images are yours and that you have the right to use them. Pinterest is especially particular about this.
6. Don't be selfish.
The goal is to share your content, right? If you commit to a new social media platform, make sure your followers know about it. Include widgets on your
blog, in emails, and other social media channels when applicable. With Pinterest, make sure your images are pinnable.
7. Don't be boring.
Know your audience. Know what makes them laugh, what stirs their emotions and what they want to see from your brand on image-based platforms.
Sesame Street uses its Tumblr account to post funny gifs, cute pictures, and clever memes centered around its
iconic characters.
