Only 12 percent of employees say they receive frequent appreciation for a job well done, and a mere 7 percent of people say their company is excellent at appreciating great work.

However, 56 percent of senior managers think their companies are above average at appreciation.

Upper management, it's time to get real. Seventy-nine percent of people cite lack of appreciation as a key reason for leaving their jobs.

For example, employees want some sort of recognition every seven days, but just 16 percent of leaders offer it. Fifty-one percent of leaders only recognize employees once a quarter-if that.

But is this the leaders' fault? Many don't know how to recognize a job well done. Many leaders:

• Don't know how to show appreciation.
• Don't know what's appropriate.
• Think it's a hassle.
