Who better to judge the effectiveness of an intranet than the employees who use it? That’s how CIBA Solutions’ Worldwide Intranet Challenge works: Employees fill out a 44-question survey in which they rank their company intranet in areas such as the homepage, the look and feel, personalization, access to forms and documents, and understanding of company culture.
This year, Discovery Health, South Africa’s largest health insurance provider, won out over 60 or so other competitors to take the No. 1 spot in the challenge. The company’s intranet, Discovery Net Access, ranked first or second in 11 areas.
Discovery’s intranet consists of two areas—DNA, the main homepage most employees see, and PinPoint, a “knowledge repository” for support staff. It was all developed in-house.
“Much of the infrastructure that was developed for the public facing web site was re-used on the intranet,” Andrew Wright, managing director at CIBA, wrote. “This helped minimize development and support costs.”
