The South African health insurer nabbed the top prize in recent Worldwide Intranet Challenge. The judges? The employees themselves.

Who better to judge the effectiveness of an intranet than the employees who use it? That’s how CIBA Solutions’ Worldwide Intranet Challenge works: Employees fill out a 44-question survey in which they rank their company intranet in areas such as the homepage, the look and feel, personalization, access to forms and documents, and understanding of company culture.

Discovery’s intranet consists of two areas—DNA, the main homepage most employees see, and PinPoint, a “knowledge repository” for support staff. It was all developed in-house.

“Much of the infrastructure that was developed for the public facing web site was re-used on the intranet,” Andrew Wright, managing director at CIBA, wrote. “This helped minimize development and support costs.”
