Why should we care so much about style?

Don’t corporate writers and editors have anything better to do than run around like crazed Punctuation Police, catching every errant em dash and coming down hard on semicolon abuse?

Do we really want every editor turning into an Oliver Stone-like grammarian, railing about the company’s demise at the hands of conspirators who refuse to accept (or reject) the serial comma?

When you walk down the hall, do your co-workers whisper, “Watch out, here comes that crazy chick who makes everyone’s title lower case. Act busy!’? Do you really want to be the kind of editor?
