IBM looks to share smarts in its blog

The company is bringing its brains to the world with its Smarter Planet blog, while establishing its social brand.

“Instrumented. Interconnected. Intelligent.”

The motto of IBM’s larger Smarter Planet effort, written in letters cut out of a photo of Earth from space, is what visitors to IBM’s A Smarter Planet blog are likely to notice first.

The blog has drawn 1 million visitors to date, and the Smarter Planet campaign has garnered 214,000 Facebook “likes.”

When blog visitors scroll down, they’ll find posts from 50 authors—many of whom are IBM employees, along with a few outside experts—on education, taxes, transportation, science, technology, poverty, health care, hunger, energy, business, crime and more.

“The blog is meant to act as a starting point for conversations that can continue on the blog or in other social spaces,” says Ethan McCarty, manager of digital and social strategy at IBM. “It is one of many examples of how IBM is leading the way to become a social business.”
