A company’s leadership communications strategy isn’t just important for outward facing communications — they’re also key for internal audiences to see. These humanizing elements can help employees relate to their leaders and create a stronger baseline culture.

At Ragan’s Social Media Conference earlier this year, Jimmy Rice, digital strategy advisor at Southwest Airlines, told the audience that it’s key for leaders to communicate authentically in order for their messages to connect.

“Being polished is good, but being genuine is golden,” King said.

But not everyone is comfortable showing their full self on stage.

“There’s a stat that says 40% of leaders are taken more seriously when they are authentic,” Rice said. “That means we need to bring out the authentic person within our leader. It takes time, energy, and trust.”

And some leaders have greater challenges in seeming approachable.
