Resilience for internal comms pros shows up in how they handle feedback, learn from their mistakes and continually build trust with their leaders.

We spoke with Mandy Mooney, vice president of internal communications at Prologis, about the resilience tactics comms pros need to build to improve in their roles and to have influence with organizational decision-makers.

“You’ve got to get in the room,” she said. “Whether that’s you earning the right to be in the room by asking for a project or to manage or you taking notes in a meeting that’s about to happen — that’s one of the best ways I’ve found to grow.”

“I was working on a big project with some colleagues and I had a misstep,” Mooney recalled. “I didn’t include someone who needed to be included, and luckily, I work with someone willing to give me real-time feedback. She and I talked about it and what needs to happen next time, and I made sure that with that feedback, I was showing my gratitude for receiving it in the first place.”

Mooney added that feedback is a necessary part of a communicator’s growth path.

“How can any of us become more trustworthy and better at our jobs if we’re not asking for feedback?” she said.
