You hear about these crazy tech companies—IBM, Yahoo, Google, Microsoft, HP— that encourage their employees to blog, and you wonder: What drives all these geeks to blog about their companies? How do they ever get any work done? What’s the point of it all?

And then there’s that gnawing question: If everyone is talking all the time about everything, what’s an employee communicator’s place in this din?

We put those questions to Terry McKenzie, senior director of global employee communication and communities organization at Sun Microsystems, which may have the most employee blogs of ’em all: 4,216 at this writing, which means 15 percent of Sun’s employee population is blogging.
