Enhance your video production from concept to scripting, production and measuring business value

AGENDA

9-10:15 a.m.

The eight-step process to better video storytelling

From initial idea to scripting, production, post-production, posting and measurement, video storytelling is far more involved than just hitting "record."

In this session you'll learn:

  • Process! Where to start and how to move your production forward calmly and efficiently
  • How mastering this process can help unlock your creativity (and what to do with this newfound creative mojo)
  • "That's not a video"—when, how and WHY to say "no" to a video concept
10:15-10:30 a.m.

BREAK

10:30 a.m.-noon

Advanced scriptwriting and concepting

Now that you've mastered the process, let's turn our attention to the creative side: writing better scripts and developing more interesting concepts.

Here's what we'll do:

  • Take a boring, run-of-the-mill CEO memo and turn it into a captivating script
  • Formulate questions that drive narratives
  • Look at an interview transcript and mine for story gold
  • Develop your next video concept

Exercise:

  • Bring a video script or concept for something you intend to produce (even if you wrote it on a bar napkin) and let's flesh out into a more entertaining, easier-to-produce document.
Noon-1 p.m.

LUNCH ON YOUR OWN

1-3 p.m.

Advanced shot list and visual development

Now that you have words on the page, it's time to plan your visuals on the screen.

In this session you'll learn:

  • How to break down your story into visual "beats"
  • The easiest way to plan out your shots so your production runs smoothly and efficiently
  • How to structure shot "flow" so your video feels faster and smoother

Exercise:

  • We'll take your newly formed script and start breaking down the elements into shots using Justin Allen's shot list template
3:15-3:30 p.m.

BREAK

3:30-4:15 p.m.

Putting it all together

In the final section of the day, we'll put it all together with a dive into editing.

Here's what we'll do:

  • Talk about the best way to organize all of your elements so you/your editor have an easier time bringing your video to life
  • How to fix common story issues in an edit
  • Why music and natural sound are your secret video storytelling weapons
