Strategic vs. tactical: Where do you stand?

I’m feeling very tactical tonight. Which is to say I’m feeling bad. Because if you haven’t heard, in the corporate world, there isn’t good or bad, only strategic or tactical.

Good ideas are strategic. Good plans are strategic. Good initiatives are strategic. Companies want strategic wins and strategic hires. Corporate departments will commonly have the word “strategic” somewhere in their title. (To wit: One of my dearest friends works in the Strategic Marketing department of her company, which makes me wonder where they put all the non-strategic marketers. In customer service, possibly, or IT?) Good people aren’t just good at what they do, they’re “really strategic.” In fact, they even have a special name for good people–they’re called strategists. Simply put, the word strategic connotes everything wonderful and holy in the corporate world.
