Are you surprised to find the practice of lying is widespread in corporations? Can you possibly be surprised? I always am. But you shouldn’t be. In large ways and in small, lying is pervasive in corporate life.

Here’s what should surprise you about corporate liars: They always think they’ll get away with it. Apparently, from a liar’s perspective, the rest of us are so stupid and naïve that we spend our days with activities like dragging our knuckles on the floor, drooling, staring absently into the middle distance, and saying things like, “duuuuuuuuuuuuh” in staff meetings. Even on the off chance they are discovered, the liars believe that it’s incredibly difficult for us stupid/naive types to call them on it publicly. And barring the rare exception, they’re right. So they do get away with it. Frequently.
