The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF’s support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.
This position will be in support of Neurology/Center for Neuroscience and Regenerative Medicine (CNRM). Digital Communications Specialist to support the CNRM. Under the direction of the Communications Manager, the Digital Communications Specialist will work to optimize and expand CNRM’s digital presence.
Responsibilities
HJF is seeking a Communications Specialist to support HJF’s internal or external communications with research, writing, editing in subject area. May also support large program or company-wide initiatives.
As part of the application process for this role, all applicants will be required to submit at least one (1) writing sample in their application. A link to their portfolio is not required but highly preferred.
Responsibilities
- Leverages best practices to plan, produce, and share organic, as well as paid, content (to include videos, graphics, and messaging) to CNRM’s social media accounts. Ensures content is optimally tailored to each platform and adheres to DoD, USU, and CNRM social media policies. Manages and updates CNRM’s social media content calendar. Responds to social media inquiries (e.g., comments, mentions, direct messages) in a timely manner and in accordance with CNRM policy. Engages with CNRM’s social media audiences, interacts with Department of Defense and Defense Health Agency affiliated social media accounts, as well as their followers. Participates in social media meetings with partners, collaborators, and stakeholders.
- Utilizes tools and technologies to routinely track, monitor, and report results from CNRM’s digital assets (e.g., social media, website, and digital campaigns). Analyzes data to articulate trends. Makes data-driven recommendations to improve engagement, increase traffic, and enhance user experience. Crafts and tracks semi-annual objectives and key results for CNRM’s digital communication activities.
- Works with Communications Manager to develop a robust, comprehensive digital communication strategy with quantifiable goals and milestones. Executes this strategy across all of CNRM’s social media channels and digital platforms. Regularly reports on outcomes and provides feedback. Makes data-driven recommendations for improvement, alters tactics, and updates strategies as required.
- Creates, curates, and manages online content on CNRM’s websites. Produces content (video, photo, messaging) and ensures content design, as well as layout, is section 508 compliant and is aligned with the latest digital media best practices. Serve as the primary action person for CNRM’s websites. Work with webmasters at USU and HJF to troubleshoot issues, add or organize pages, reconfigure designs, etc.
- Works with Communication Manager and cross functional teams to plan, create, and disseminate multichannel campaigns and monthly newsletters. Crafts and delivers social media shareables (e.g. messaging and accompanying graphics) to campaign-specific audiences and stakeholders.
- Monitors digital communication trends and topics relevant to CNRM. Conduct social listening to identify potential threats and/or areas of opportunities to strengthen CNRM’s brand narrative. Stays up-to-date on the latest digital and social media platforms, features, practices, and standards. Communicates findings to the Communication Manager.
- Planning, creating, and implementing content for CNRM’s social media channels, websites, and multichannel campaigns. Proactively identifies opportunities and avenues to repurpose evergreen content for website, social media, and digital campaigns. Reports data, analyzes metrics, monitors trends, and shares evidence-based recommendations to improve the efficacy and impact of CNRM’s digital communication strategies.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Must have outstanding writing skills.
- Keen ability to convey complex ideas and scientific information into language appropriate for a lay audience.
- Strong interpersonal, research and interview skills and storytelling skills.
- Must have sharp editorial, proofreading and organizational skills.
- Solid basic photography and video editing skills (familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, or other graphic design platforms)
- Experience with content management systems such as Drupal and social media management tools. Ability to multitask, coordinate tasks, meet project deadlines and prioritize multiple request.
- Ability to use sound judgment in solving problems.

Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in English, Communications or similar required
- Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience required
