A seemingly grassroots Web site is actually the work of one powerful advocacy group, but bloggers care more about the PR blacklist

A rudimentary pie chart leads the site showing 32 percent of Americans are renters compared to the 33 percent that are mortgage owners. Alongside the graph is the site’s mission statement calling out “whining” home-loan borrowers and asking why Congress is rushing to bail them out.

“We don’t have lobbyists in Washington, D.C. We don’t get a tax deduction for our rent, and we don’t get sweetheart government loans,” the site proclaims. “Quite simply, we are just Angry Renters. And now it is our time to be heard: No government bailouts!”

Here’s the rub: AngryRenters may not have lobbyists, but it does have Steve Forbes and former House majority leader Dick Armey. This pair of Republicans head FreedomWorks, a D.C. advocacy group arguing against government bailout, and FreedomWorks created AngryRenters.com.
