Nearly 10,000 communication professionals have established profile pages on MyRagan.com, 555 of whom list “speechwriting” as an area of expertise. Most of those folks are signed up for one or more of the executive communication-related groups: Speechwriting, Freelance Speechwriters, Canadian Speechwriters, CEO Communications and Public Speaking & Coaching.
Most MyRagan members use these groups to pose super-specific questions to peers in hopes of getting quick, useful answers. Here are a few exchanges from recent months. (We’ve stripped names and affiliations for obvious reasons.) Even some of the questions gave us ideas.
Q. Have any of you helped your CEO participate in new-hire orientations? Specifically, we are exploring a video welcome from our CEO.
A. Try to avoid the cliched “Welcome and we’re a wonderful place to work.” Instead, have your CEO say how glad he/she is that they’ve joined the organization, that their hearts and their minds and skills are needed for the organziation to succeed. And then perhaps do something off-the-wall, like have the CEO talk about his/her own experience when first joining the company, what the first week was like and what he/she could have done to be more successful.
