Year-end is the time for announcing many awards competitions and winners: the Golden Globes, Time’s Person of the Year, Sports Illustrated’s Sportsman or Sportswoman of the Year, and the like. That makes sense. Competitions give us a way of reviewing the past, and planning the year ahead.

That’s why we set the deadline for entries to the Ragan Recognition Awards at Jan.9. Many of you wanted just a little more time, so have at it.

I’m a judge. You want to chat about it? I’m right here. Here’s a tip: The photography and CEO message categories are the least competitive, because of the fewer number of entries we receive (if you get my drift . . . capiche? Who’s your pal?).

If you’re thinking of entering—or simply reviewing your work to plan for next year—the 12 categories provide a structure for review. Here’s one key to each:

1. Headlines: Got to have an active verb and promise a benefit to the reader.
