A number of political science graduates and English majors caught up in campaigns volunteer to write speeches for candidates. The first time they handle this chore, they do it for free. After that, they want to be paid. They’ve learned what a tough assignment it is. For one thing, your prose may be subject to the scrutiny of anonymous campaign workers who impose themselves between you and the aspirant. Their qualifications may be nothing stronger than loyalty. They are certain to dislike pet phrases and will inevitably suggest additions. Most of their ideas are an incredibly hard sell and should never be uttered.
