Infographic: Why social media is so addictive

It turns out there’s scientific research that explains why we can’t get enough of Facebook. What do you think about these findings?

How much time do you spend on social media?

The average Facebook user spends 405 minutes on the site each month. To put that number in perspective, that’s equivalent to 81 hours per year.

Why do people spend so much time on social networks?

An infographic from has a few explanations:

1. Social media rewards our brains.

A study of people aged 18-85 found that resisting social media is harder than other urges, including sleep, sex and smoking. That might sound like a crazy claim, but there’s proof to back it up: Posting about yourself on social media rewards your brain the same way food and sex do.

2. Social media allows us to talk about ourselves.

People love to talk about themselves. In one study, on average, people gave up 17 to 25 percent of possible earnings to talk about him or herself. Typically, people spend 30 to 40 percent of their time talking about themselves, but that jumps to 80 percent on social media.
