Pop singers dominate Yahoo and Bing’s top searches of 2013

‘Twerk’ may have fallen short of being the word of the year, but the singer who popularized the dance, Miley Cyrus, inspired a whole lot of online inquiries.

Singer Miley Cyrus, reality TV star Kim Kardashian, and model Kate Upton were the top three on Yahoo’s list of the most-searched terms of 2013. Cyrus’ top spot on the list seems to prove that, while “twerk” wasn’t deemed the word of the year by Oxford Dictionaries, the singer’s dancing at the MTV Video Music Awards was certainly on people’s minds this year.

Technology has a place on this year’s list it didn’t seem to have last year, with the iPhone 5 and the video game “Minecraft” taking spots.

Bing unveiled its 2013 top searches this week as well, though it didn’t rank items in one big, master list. Instead, it grouped searches into categories. Once again, famous women were the most-searched people, though it was Beyonce Knowles who took the No. 1 spot in Bing’s rankings, and Cyrus was No. 9.
