Best practices for AI adoption on small teams
There’s more to it than budget.
At Ragan’s AI Horizons Conference, Michelle Bauer, chief communications officer at The Chemours Company, said that even smaller teams can create noticeable changes within their workflows when adopting automation.
“AI success isn’t about budget,” Bauer said. “It’s about culture. You can buy software, but you can’t buy belief. You have to earn belief through transparency, involvement and consistent wins. It’s a mindset shift that changes everything.”
Bauer said that communicators need to confront the emotions that come with AI adoption, especially fears that many employees feel about being replaced by technology. She recommended that comms pros, especially those on small teams, focus on the human component of AI.
“The humans direct, the humans validate and the humans improve,” Bauer said. “AI handles the volume. People own the value. That clarity builds trust and quality.”
She added that to spur adoption on small teams, communicators should share examples of repeatable low-lift work. For instance, comms pros can run an information session about how AI can help employees with data entry tasks. This will help remove AI stigma and show a concrete application of AI.
“You need to show your team what you are building with AI,” Bauer told the audience.
