How small comms teams can build AI assistants to scale their work
Custom GPTs are useful for freeing up communicators to lean into their expertise.
A small comms team can do great work with limited resources, but even they can use a little help from time to time.
During Ragan’s AI Horizons Conference earlier this year, Carin Campbell Smith, chief strategy officer at the St. Lucie County Tax Collector’s Office, and Chris Craft, St. Lucie County tax collector, shared how their office is using AI to make comms processes more efficient. Campbell Smith said that her team developed a custom GPT designed to help leaders write shorter and more consistent employee updates and free up time for communicators to help refine them.
“What pulls on me the most time-wise is my expertise,” Campbell Smith said. “Reviewing things, editing things and making sure that our tone and our brand and our voice is consistent. Chris works on that internally as well to make sure that voice is consistent across the internal communications.”
Campbell Smith added that working with a custom AI tool helps avoid inconsistencies that can arise when several communicators are working on writing the same messaging.
