The editors at MDU Resource Group prove it’s never too late to redesign a publication

Resource used to be a dull publication … until now

No offense to former editors, but the articles in Resource, the publication for employees of MDU Resources Group, were boring and jargon-riddle. The drab layout and design was even worse.

But the drudgery ended in February, when employees of this North Dakota-based energy company received the redesigned issue of Resource. This thing is pretty—and readable!

With the redesign, editors at MDU proved that no matter how dismal a publication is, it’s never too late to put out a great employee magazine. For that, we have Lindsay Hill to thank. She is Resource managing editor.

“We wanted to make the new version more relatable to employees and to communicate more of a strategic plan,” Hill told Ragan.com. “And not make it so boring.”

The new Resource looks like a consumer magazine. It’s glossy and full-color. The design pops with templates that wind text around high-quality, photojournalistic images. The writing is punchy; the leads are inviting, and the copy humorous and informative.
