ESG Workshop: Storytelling Strategies

Tuesday, May 24, 2022 • 1-3:30 p.m. ET

Make your organization stand out from the ESG crowd

Employees, customers, the public and the news media care about Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG), one of the biggest trends in years. ESG is not just for publicly traded companies. Private firms and nonprofits also are changing their practices. But ESG poses challenges for communicators, who must master new skills and learn to apply existing skills to a new subject.

Join Ragan Consulting Group and your peers on May 24 for this interactive, hands-on workshop where you’ll learn by doing with ESG and storytelling experts Jim Ylisela and Tom Corfman. You’ll dive into stories and come up with actionable ideas to take your ESG reporting to the next level.

Top 5 things you’ll learn in this workshop:

  • Be the best ESG storyteller in your organization: How to read and analyze data, find the best sources, and write a story that resonates with employees, customers and news media.
  • The ESG recipe: Read examples of ESG content and make suggestions using the techniques of storytelling and journalism.
  • Scope out: What do regulations proposed by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission mean for communicators? What do you need to know?
  • Virtual newsroom: Pitch your story ideas to the workshop trainers. Then learn how to report and write them.
  • Wrap up: Final tips for your ESG storytelling, and get your questions answered.

You’ll also receive these exclusive bonus materials:

  • How to Score Your ESG Storytelling with ESG-9 — Ragan Consulting Group’s nine-point criteria
  • FAQs: Eight answers you need to have to tell your ESG stories
  • 7 Ways Communicators Should Start Telling ESG Stories

AGENDA

1-1:30 p.m. ET
ESG 101: What communicators need to know

Reporting on your organization’s performance on Environmental, Social and Governance issues is no longer just about assembling complex data tables and filing required documents. Your many audiences — employees, customers, news media and other stakeholders — want to know how your company is looking out for the planet, caring for its employees, and conducting its affairs openly and ethically. And they don’t want to sift through complicated reports to find out. That’s where storytelling comes in. In the opening session, you’ll learn:

  • Why ESG storytelling has become a top priority for company communicators
  • Why ESG is essential to your company — and why your audience(s) care
  • How to turn new SEC regulations to your advantage by using the required disclosures to start telling stories
1:30-2 p.m. ET
The ESG Recipe: How to tell a good ESG story using the RCG 9-point playbook

In this session, your trainers will dive into some examples of ESG storytelling — good, bad and ugly — take them apart and talk about making them better using Ragan Consulting’s nine-point formula. You’ll learn how to:

  • Translate complex ESG data and documentation into compelling human stories
  • Find the right sources and the best examples to tell your ESG stories
  • Organize an ESG story with relatable examples and informative quotes from your experts
  • Create compelling leads and better headlines to attract your readers

Practical tips for ESG reporting and writing

Senior communicators will share tips and techniques for ESG storytelling and creating readable — and credible — sustainability reports. You’ll discover how to:

  • Approach your ESG reporting
  • Organize your sustainability reports for a broader audience
  • Find the best stories inside your data
  • Foster collaboration among all the departments responsible for ESG information
2:30-3:15 p.m.
Virtual Newsroom: Pitch us your story ideas

What stories do you need to tell? In the final session, your trainers simulate the news meeting they run with their clients to discuss your story ideas and how to report them. They will help you answer these questions:

  • What makes this a “good” ESG story?
  • What does the audience need to know?
  • What’s the best way to report this story? What are the “must-haves” and “nice-to-haves”?
  • What’s the best format to tell this story? Text, video, infographic or combination?
  • How do we make sure we don’t sugarcoat the news?
