Ready for some deep thoughts from Generation Y?

Last week, PR agency Shift Communications, which Virgin Mobile recently named its agency of record, laid off 11 employees—that’s 10 percent of its workforce—at the company’s Boston and San Francisco offices.

PR Week said the ax fell on Shift’s junior staffers.

On Monday, surviving Shift employee Amanda Gravel blogged about the experience. She painted the layoffs as a learning experience for those unfortunate junior staffers getting the boot—in other words, chin up Gen Y.

“Those kids who were raised thinking everyone’s a winner, that you get a trophy just for showing up, and whose parents and teachers taught them that they can rule the world—are, as a cohort, growing up a little bit more,” Gravel wrote.

It’s tough out there in the work world, she conceded. And sure, previous generations have experienced recessions, but this—whatever this is—is Gen Y’s Waterloo.
