Last week, Grammar Girl used the presidential inauguration to discuss verb modifiers, such as “faithfully.” President Obama repeated the oath of office as read by Chief Justice John Roberts, “I will execute the office of the president of the United States faithfully,” instead of saying “faithfully execute,” as it is spelled out in the Constitution.
