Most communicators surveyed in Ragan’s 2023 Communications Benchmark Report said that HR owns most of their organization’s diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I) initiatives (38%), with just 3% saying the work was largely owned by communications. Given this insight, it’s no surprise that many communicators are still figuring out how to effectively support this important work.

During Ragan’s Strategic Communications Conference last fall, Amira Barger, Edelman EVP and head of health sector DEI communications explained how communicators can hold their organization accountable to a DE&I maturity model. Before diving into the nitty gritty, Barger explained how these benchmarks ladder up to five levels of progress:
