Ragan Releases 2026 Communications Benchmark Report: Communicators are at Critical Inflection Point
New research highlights impact of AI adoption, evolving team structures and ongoing gaps in measurement and business alignment
CHICAGO — April 29, 2026 — Ragan Communications released today its 2026 Communications Benchmark Report, revealing the profession is at a critical inflection point. Communicators face increasing pressure to deliver business impact while navigating rapid technological and organizational change amidst increasingly complex national and global market factors.
Based on a survey of more than 800 communicators worldwide, the Ragan Benchmark Report shows professionals are embracing tools like generative AI while working to strengthen their role as strategic advisors within their organizations.
“Communicators are being pulled in two directions: increasing demand for strategic impact alongside persistent operational friction,” said Mike Prokopeak, director of Council learning, community & content at Ragan. “The 2026 Ragan Communications Benchmark Report shows that those who build business fluency, strengthen relationships, accelerate AI adoption and align to enterprise priorities will define the next era of the profession.”
Key findings include:
- 57% of communicators say they are likely to launch major initiatives this year despite economic uncertainty and reputational risk.
- 50% are using AI to create more content, while 29% are reinvesting time savings into strategy and 24% into measurement and analysis.
- Only 5% say AI is reducing headcount, indicating teams are redeploying resources rather than shrinking.
- The top specializations to future-proof communications include AI and technology, crisis management, executive communications, employee communications and data analysis.
- 42% of organizations now use matrixed team structures, surpassing centralized models (38%) as companies prioritize agility.
- Just one-quarter of teams meaningfully align communications KPIs with business goals, underscoring a persistent gap between activity and impact.
Insights from the 2026 Report offer focus areas to help communicators navigate today’s complex landscape, build trust and connect their efforts to business outcomes, thereby elevating their functions and helping guide their organization into the future.
