Scott Thomsen

Scott Thomsen is director of communications for the Washington State Department of Transportation, where he oversees internal and external communications for six regions and multiple divisions, including mega projects, multimodal transportation, public transportation, aviation, rail, active transportation, tolling, maintenance projects and the largest ferry system in North America. He previously served as director of communications and public affairs for the Ventura County Fire Department and is a past president of the National Association of Government Communicators, which is dedicated to recognizing, developing and advocating for excellence in government communications. Thomsen has more than a decade of experience in government communications after working for news organizations around the country, including The Orange County Register and The Associated Press. He’s also a past instructor for FEMA’s Advanced Public Information Officer courses.
