5 ways to use Snapchat

If you want to try the app but aren’t sure what to do with it, here are a few ideas.

Did you know that Snapchat users share 104,000 pictures every minute?

I didn’t realize how big Snapchat was until I saw that statistic and investigated the new social media phenomenon further. Admittedly, I blew off Snapchat as just another way for young kids to share selfies and sexts.

While there certainly is some of that on Snapchat, the premise of the app is to share fleeting moments with your friends. Each snap you send automatically deletes itself 10 seconds after your friend opens it. It allows for quick, fleeting interactions.

While I’m not suggesting that every brand, marketer or community manager sign up for a Snapchat account, I have found a handful of unconventional and downright brilliant ways to use the app.

Here are five examples:

1. Solve crimes.

You heard that right. The social network has actually been linked to solving a handful of crimes, like this deadly hit-and-run accident in California.

2. Launch exclusive products.

It takes a brave brand to test the waters and launch exclusive products via Snapchat, but that’s exactly what Taco Bell did for its Beefy Crunch Burrito launch. It proved to be an experimental way for Taco Bell to connect with its core audience on a more personal level.

3. Share coupons.

16 Handles, a frozen yogurt chain in New York City, made headlines for being the first brand to join Snapchat. Community Manager Adam Britten uses it to connect with the brand’s audience and share coupons.

4. Live-snap your favorite shows.

We have all heard of live-tweeting during your favorite TV show. Many of us have already done it. However, there is a growing group of people who live-snap moments from their favorite shows.

5. Discover new friends.

I would venture to say that the vast majority of people only Snapchat with folks they know in real life. There is a fast-growing subReddit helping Snapchatters find new people to connect with (some are not suitable for work).

If all else fails, you can always go back to sending your friends selfies.
