It was the worst man-made disaster in history. The Deepwater Horizon fatal explosion and fire and the catastrophic spewing of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico threatened marine species and other wildlife, as well as the livelihoods of millions in five states along the Gulf Coast. Toward “Making Mississippi Whole,” the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality tapped the expertise of Becky Russell. To counter the PR might of BP and Halliburton and a wide public lack of understanding, she set up the interactive website www.restore.ms, and launched texting and social media information efforts. Today, in large part because of Russell’s efforts to raise public awareness and involvement, coastal Mississippi is returning to its former vitality.
