Citigroup began covering travel expenses for employees in Texas seeking to leave the state to have an abortion, making it the first U.S. bank to do so. The policy was enacted in response to a recent Texas law banning abortions after six weeks, the most restrictive abortion law in the country.

“In response to changes in reproductive health care laws in certain states in the U.S., beginning in 2022 we provide travel benefits to facilitate access to adequate resources,” the bank wrote in a quarterly filing. Representatives from the bank declined to comment further.
