Close encounters of the Twitter kind: When tweeting leads to meeting

Communicators tell us what happens when conversations go beyond 140 characters and happen—gasp!—face to face.

One of my Twitter followers was coming to Chicago for the afternoon. She suggested we meet for coffee. I guess you could say we’ve “known” each other for about a year, but this would be the first time our conversation wouldn’t run through a computer screen.

She e-mailed me the day before and said, “Looking forward to meeting you IRL!”

Huh? Did I need to book a plane ticket to Ireland? Luckily, the savvy social media staff at Ragan translated: In Real Life.

So, we met. At first, it took us a few seconds to recognize each other. But we had a nice little conversation. And she didn’t un-follow me, even though I knocked a cup of hot tea in her lap.

Have you done something similar (besides spilling a hot beverage all over someone)? We asked MyRaganites and other communicators what it was like to meet their Twitter followers face to face. Feel free to share your stories.
