For technology publisher O’Reilly Media, finding the key concept behind building a successful blog was as easy as looking to their mission statement: “Change the world by spreading the knowledge of innovators.”

“We really did see the blog as a vehicle for people to get their ideas out,” says Sara Winge, vice president of Radar, the blog O’Reilly launched in March 2005.

• Founded in 1978

• Headquartered in Sebastopol, Calif., with additional offices in Massachusetts, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Taiwan and China

• Originally started as a publisher of technical manuals

• Created first Web portal, the Global Network Navigator

• Runs Safari Books Online, a Web-based reference library, in conjunction with Pearson Technology Group

• Hosts numerous technology conferences each year
