How intranet favorites become popular mobile apps

JM Family puts cafeteria menus, staff directories and other popular features at employees’ fingertips.

Think big when creating mobile apps for employees—but don’t forget to think small at the same time.

When JM Family, a Deerfield Beach, Fla., auto distributor and financing company, set out a year ago to develop applications for its associates (as its employees are known) to use on their iPhones, key business apps were obviously on the list. However, the company also brought some smaller but useful and popular intranet features to its apps library—such as menus for its cafeterias, and current wait times for onsite medical clinics.

JM Family’s mobile apps journey started about year ago, when nearly 630 of the company’s associates countrywide—mainly in sales, marketing, and the corporate offices—received iPhones to help them access information on the go.
