How to use email in conjunction with other tools for great internal comms
Email alone isn’t enough — but it’s still a powerhouse when combined with other tools.

“Email on its own is ineffective,” said Devin Owens, communications manager at Workshop, during Ragan’s Internal Communications Conference. It’s a bold statement in general, but especially for someone who works for an internal email platform.
But Owens’ point is that email needs to be part of an integrated strategy, not a standalone. When it’s paired with other communication tools, it’s as powerful as it’s ever been.
“It’s a ‘both and’ at this point,” Owens said. “So, it’s an email and Slack, it’s email and SMS, it’s email and the all-hands, all-teams. You have to think about how you are using communications and then funneling it out to different segments.”
The reason for this more omnichannel strategy is that, as communicators, we know it takes more than one touchpoint before a message is really absorbed. To aid in that knowledge transfer, Owens suggested three key points to keep in mind with each email:
- Make your subject line enticing.
- Make your body copy concise and clear.
- Include a call to action — or make it obvious that no action is needed.
