Infographic: How social media will change the 2012 Olympics

This summer’s games in London will be different from any other because of social media. Here’s what to expect.

The last summer Olympics took place in 2008. Since then, a lot has changed.

Not only are we a little older, but so is social media. For example, Facebook was relatively small in 2008 with just 100 million users. This year, Facebook has 845 million users.

To show how social media will differentiate the 2012 Olympics London from those of years past, take a look at this infographic from Olympic.org and Hub.Olympic.org.

Organizers are calling this year’s Olympics the world’s “first social games.” For the first time, athletes and fans will be able to interact with each other in The Athletes’ Hub, a site that will aggregate the social media profiles of more than 1,000 current and former Olympians.

During the London 2012 Summer Olympics, athletes will:

  • Have real-time text chats with fans from inside Olympic Village
  • Share their results and engage with fans
  • Grow their social media followings
  • And much more
