Infographic: Instagram growth outpaces Facebook

When a smartphone app grows at a faster pace than Facebook, you know it’s big. This graphic has the nitty-gritty on the Instagram craze.

More than 1 million people downloaded Instagram the day it became available on Android phones. The photo-sharing app currently has 40 million users, and Facebook recently bought it for $1 billion. What’s with all the fuss?

To better understand the Instagram craze, Online Colleges created an infographic with everything you need to know about the mobile photo app.

According to the graphic, a new user signs up for Instagram every second, which puts it on track to reach 1 million users only two years after it launched (October 2010). It took Facebook four years to reach the same milestone.

Even President Obama has jumped in on the action. He joined the photo-sharing network in January.

Here are a few more stats:

  • Users upload more than 5 million photos per day, or 58 photos per second.
  • There are more than 1 billion photos on Instagram.
  • People like photos more than they comment on them.
  • Instagram users produce 575 likes and 81 comments every second.
