Infographic: What recruiters really think of your social media photos

Did you know wearing sunglasses in your LinkedIn profile photo makes you 10 percent less likeable?

How would you feel if you knew your LinkedIn profile picture cost you a job interview?

We like to think recruiters form opinions of us based on our skills and qualifications, but an infographic from Photo Feeler and Avid Careerist reveals that your profile picture may have more sway than you’d think.

According to the infographic, recruiters spend an average of 6 seconds on your LinkedIn profile. They spend 19 percent of that time looking at your profile photo, or a whole 1.14 seconds!

Additionally, people form an impression of you based on your profile photo in 1/10 of a second.

How can you ensure that your photo makes you look as likeable, competent and qualified as possible? Follow these tips:

  • Don’t wear sunglasses. They make the wearer 10 percent less likeable.
  • Smile with your teeth. Showing your teeth when you smile is twice as likely to win people over as smiling with your mouth closed.
  • Dress professionally. When you are dressed up in your profile photo, people see you as 43 percent more competent and 58 percent more influential in your industry.
