PR Daily acquires PR University

‘Christmas comes early’ as Ragan Communications expands training webinars, and PR University members get access to an extensive video training platform.

Ragan Communications-owned PR Daily, the No. 1 PR website, has extended its reach in the industry with the purchase of the PR University webinar brand from Bulldog Reporter.

In a move that expands offerings for customers, the acquisition brings together the two leading brands in communications education, says PR Daily Publisher Mark Ragan.

“We were very happy to buy PR University, because the brand meant a lot to a lot of people,” Ragan says. “For many, many years, PR University has been producing fabulous strategies for the industry.”

“It’s a perfect fit,” adds Brian Pittman, a former Bulldog Reporter vice president who acts as consultant to Ragan Communications and webinar manager for the rebooted PR Daily‘s PR University. “Ragan simply acquired a perfectly aligned and respected brand.”

The acquisition came after Bulldog Reporter, an Oakland, Calif., company that provided training and services for public relations professionals, filed for bankruptcy protection late last year, reportedly citing liabilities of less than $1 million and assets of $178,220.

The rebranded PR Daily‘s PR University will continue to produce topnotch webinars for industry pros looking for strategies and expert advice that afford them an advantage in a cutthroat industry, Ragan says. It combines PR University’s strengths with those of Ragan Communications, which offers webinars, events, a rapidly growing video training site and several of the most respected website in communications, including PR Daily and

Ragan Communications’ webinar offerings will be enriched by PR University’s experience and brand name.

PR University had been offering 60 webinars a year, but to avoid duplication, the number will be dialed back to the 30 most essential topics, trends and skills for PR pros, Ragan says.

The move will bring Pittman over as a consultant to Ragan Communications and webinar manager for the rebooted PR Daily‘s PR University. Pittman is a veteran journalist, communicator and marketer who serves as consultant, webinar moderator and editorial contributor to Ragan Communications and PR University. He was vice president and associate publisher at Bulldog Reporter.

Pittman, who has been a partner at and editor of Utah Business magazine and various PR trade publications, is also a produced screenwriter and a member of the Writers Guild of America.

Senior-level practitioners

Pittman is the presence behind PR University, which debuted 10 years ago as an audio conference platform offering master classes that were heavy on practical and tactical advice and bulleted takeaways.

“Master classes are exactly what it sounds like: senior-level PR and corporate communications practitioners from brands and agencies,” he says.

Offerings also include “Meet the Editors” webinars featuring journalist panels offering media relations insight and pitching tips on any given beat.

“If we did, for example, travel editors’ audio conference for PR people, we would recruit three to five travel writers from A-list media,” Pittman says.
