Taco Bell fends off claim that interns created the Doritos taco

A pair of former interns say they came up with the concept in 1995—and even have old promotional materials to back it up. Taco Bell dismisses the claim as merely ‘an idea without execution.’

According to former Taco Bell interns Andrea Watt and Mark Rader, the Doritos Locos Taco was an idea they and two other interns thought up nearly 20 years ago.

The group of four interns aren’t the first people to come forward and say they had the idea to make a taco shell out of Doritos—last year, a federal prisoner sued the company, saying the tacos were his idea—but they seem to have a bit more of a leg to stand on than some others who have laid claim to the crunchy concept.

The group has documents from a 1995 intern competition for new business ideas, including their mock-up counter cards for “The All-New Dorito Tacos.” Taco Bell introduced its Doritos Locos Tacos in 2012.

The interns aren’t asking for money for the idea, just credit.
