Washington, DC
JOB DESCRIPTION

As a valued colleague on our Internal Communications team, you will provide expert advice and guidance on developing and delivering internal communication strategies. This role requires an experienced communicator to work closely with executives and their staff to tell the Fannie Mae story, support change management and engagement, and help employees see the impact of their work. You will bring active listening and endless curiosity and stand confidently behind your communications recommendations based on data insights and experience. While not a formal leader, you will take the lead on communications, work independently with stakeholders, and mentor colleagues with less experience. To excel in this dynamic and impactful role, you must possess a passion for clear and creative writing, demonstrate a collaborative and proactive spirit, and embody integrity and accountability.

THE IMPACT YOU WILL MAKE

The Internal Communications Lead Associate will play a critical role shaping the communications strategy of a variety of executives and their programs. Responsibilities include:

  • Strategic Communication Leadership: Develop, deliver, and advise business division partners on internal strategic communications for the enterprise or for select business division audiences. This individual will align communications with the company’s mission and business objectives and ensure that all stakeholders are informed and engaged.
  • Executive Communications Counsel: Serve as a trusted communications advisor to the highest-level executives, providing strategic counsel and ensuring that their messages are clear, compelling, and consistent.
  • Change Management: Play a key role in planning and managing organizational change, using communication to mitigate resistance and foster a positive, forward-looking culture.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Foster integrated communications by partnering with public relations, executive communications, marketing, and social media teams to maximize content reach and effectiveness.
  • Creative Storytelling: Use communications best practices, implementing storytelling and data-driven insights to inform and improve communications strategies in support of business outcomes.

  • Minimum Required Experiences
    • Minimum of 4 years working in Internal Communications in a corporate environment required; for-profit, private sector, commercial industry experience is strongly preferred.
    • Experience developing complex, strategic communications plans and successfully implementing them end-to-end across a business division or enterprise.
    • Exceptional writing, editing, presenting and storytelling abilities to develop creative content for various internal channels and tailor communications to an author’s voice and targeted audiences.
    • Excellent relationship management and project management skills, with the ability to effectively influence and negotiate, facilitate meetings, and resolve conflicts including with colleagues who may be more senior to you.
    • Experience helping an organization to plan and manage change, meet strategic objectives, and address employee sentiment and feedback.
    • Demonstrated strategic thinker who takes initiative and has solid decision-making skills.
    • Proven ability to lead as an individual contributor to drive belonging, constructive challenge, continuous improvement, and alignment throughout the Public Relations and Operations team and across partnerships.
    • Ability to track, measure, and analyze data, providing recommendations for improvement and adapting to evolving business needs.
    • Skilled in AP style writing and collaborating across Microsoft Office Suite applications.

    Desired Experiences

    • Bachelor’s degree in communications or public affairs preferred.
    • Strong executive presence, with prior experience supporting executive communications.
    • Understanding of corporate event planning, technology, and logistics.
    • Demonstrated ability to work respectfully and cooperatively with people of different functional expertise towards a common goal.
    • Ability to create and promote messaging that resonates with a variety of audiences.
    • Adept at managing project plans, resources, and people to ensure successful project completion.
    • Passion for learning the business, building relationships, and understanding different areas of expertise across the organization.
    • Experience using SharePoint content management, Salesforce Marketing Cloud (or similar CRM), Adobe Workfront, or digital signage software a plus.
