Will brands and users want a Facebook ‘want’ button?

Retailers and social media pros are mostly optimistic about the news that Facebook will soon enable brands to open up their posts to be ‘wanted’ as well as ‘liked.’ But there are some doubts.

Social media’s king of the hill is rolling out a new “want” button for a few retail brands so users can add items to collections, not unlike Pinterest’s pinboards. The feature is in a test phase right now but will probably roll out to other brands soon.

Retailers and social media experts are divided on whether the new button is a handy tool for users and brands or simply adds clutter to a platform that financial analysts worry advertises too aggressively.

For brands

Margaret Yekulis, brand marketing manager at FareBuzz, says she doesn’t know what the “want” button really accomplishes, other than competing with Pinterest.
