Infographic: What you need to know about podcasts

Podcasts are gaining mainstream popularity. Should your organization hop on the trend? The statistics in this infographic may help you decide.

When I was at a party a few weeks ago, a friend asked me if I was keeping up with “Serial.”

I said no, and asked which channel it was on.

As it turns out, “Serial” is a podcast produced by the creators of “This American Life.” It tells a nonfiction story over the course of a season, revealing a new chapter each week.

“Serial” has captured much of America’s attention in the past few months, and sparked interest in podcasts as a medium. (Podcasts are also a great way to engage employees.)

An infographic from MarketingPodcasts.com discusses podcasts’ rise to relevance, and the potential they have to help you reach more of your audience. Here are some statistics from the infographic:

  • iTunes has 250,000 podcasts, which is up 200,000 in 2010.
  • Nearly one in three Americans have listened to a podcast. Fifteen percent of Americans have listened to one in the past month.
  • Half of all U.S. podcast listeners are between the ages of 12 and 34.
