Ragan Research: Gen AI is poised for takeoff

Ragan’s 2024 Communications Benchmark Report quantifies the growth of gen AI in comms, and points to a big surge in usage ahead.

According to Ragan’s 2024 Communications Leadership Council Benchmark report, one in five (20%) communicators are currently using artificial intelligence tools.

Given how widespread the generative AI discussion has become, that number may strike some as low. Less than a quarter of communications teams are using what many think of as a game-changing technology?

Comms teams may indeed be taking a cautious approach to what is still a developing technology, but that 20% is still a big jump from the 3% who said they were using AI in 2023.

And further data shows gen AI is poised for a big surge this year. The 2024 report, the sixth edition of this signature research project conducted for members of Ragan’s Communications Leadership Council, is based on a survey of nearly 1,000 communicators worldwide.

A majority (57%) of communicators expect increased use of AI in their roles over the next three years, a 43% increase over 2023. That’s by far the biggest expected change in focus, according to survey respondents.
