AGENDA

Hone your writing skills in just a few short weeks. You’ll receive assignments, a certificate of completion and a writing style guide you can tailor to your organization.

Week 1: Powerful Principles
Mar. 2, 1-3 p.m. ET
New Fundamentals: Principles of More Powerful Writing in Communications

Communication strategies often fail to make an impact due to lack of clarity and poorly written messaging.

This session is the refresher you need to eliminate confusion and doubt in your copy so you increase your writing’s impact—and your impact at your organization to communicate with conviction. You’ll learn:

  • How to discover your writer’s voice—and make it fit with the voice of your organization
  • Planning for impact: Smart, quick ways to gather and structure information
  • WIFM: How to find and write to audience needs (What’s In It For Me) so you get eyeballs on your writing
  • Fundamentals, revisited: Often forgotten, overlooked techniques to write simpler, more direct sentences that propel readers (hint: active voice isn’t a cure-all)
  • Newsroom hacks: Insider tips for how to craft strong headlines, teasers and leads on deadline

Light Homework:

  • Take the writing self-assessment
  • In course examples: What’s wrong with these emails and press releases?
  • Come prepared to talk about what you learned from the tests

Instructor: Jill Stewart is a working writer and adjunct instructor who teaches at DePaul University’s College of Communications.

Guest: Jaime Bedrin is a journalist and media writing instructor at Montclair University.

Week 2: Persuasive Writing
Mar. 9, 1-3 pm ET
Next-Level Writing: The Art and Science of More Persuasive, Creative and Inclusive Copy

Now that you have the competencies of clear writing down, we’ll focus on writing more persuasively and creatively so you convince—and captivate—all readers. You’ll also learn how to apply these techniques to a variety of common communication documents:

  • The Science of Persuasion: How leading behavioral persuasion theories apply to writing
  • How to rein in overexcited, exaggerated writing to persuade without hype
  • Credibility boosters: How to choose the right word and use it in the right place
  • The Art of Poetry: How to add color, context and creativity to anything you write (a deep dive into metaphor, simile, vivid descriptions and more)
  • Why inclusive writing matters—and DE&I guidelines every writer can implement

Light Homework:

  • Find a sharable communication document or brief within your organization (not your own!)
  • Rewrite the headline and lead to be more credible and inclusive
  • Bring the “before” and “after”

Instructor: Jill Stewart is a working writer and adjunct instructor who teaches at DePaul University’s College of Communications.
